Acoustic Sound Shells

Sound shells are portable, large, arced walls that create an envelope around the performers and gives the student performer an appropriate musical opportunity where they hear themselves as a group that matches the classroom educational experience. They will be able to hear each other, blend to each other, match musical pitches, match volume levels, match tempos, and match musical emotions - all concepts taught on a daily basis.

CNC This!

A few years ago we purchased a Haas CNC Milling machine, with the help of a UFREF grant, and it has been fantastic. I would like to expand the opportunities that students have to learn this highly valuable skill through the purchase of multiple desktop CNC mills. A desktop CNC mill is very simply, a CNC mill small enough to fit and operate on top of a desk, but powerful enough to cut materials such as wood, plastic, and light metals. Having multiple desktop machines will allow more students to learn the principles of CNC technology and manufacturing on a small scale, before transferring those skills to the larger, and more capable full size Haas that we have in the Fab Lab (Fabrication Laboratory).

Courtyard Clean-up

4th grade leaders will be beautifying and maintaining the Newell Elementary Courtyard to be used for class parties, lessons, and enjoyment. items. I would like to see the group construct raised beds that can be easily maintained year after year and be located in a space designated for the Courtyard Crew to access. Additionally, the students will be decorating and constructing bird houses and wind chimes to bring wildlife to the area. I would also like to see a birdbath and butterfly bush to also encourage wild life. My hope is that teachers will take their students out there not only to enjoy the aesthetics of this project but to also use it as a teaching tool for science topics, non-fiction reading/writing, and thematic units.

From Virtual to Reality: Integrating the Use of Virtual Welding Technology in Mechanics

Students will utilize a virtual welder to help hone their skills and ease some of the fear of stick (SMAW) welding before heading to the shop to practice the skills in a real setting. This would accomplish three (3) objectives in the program: (1) Increase student confidence in welding and therefore increase safe operation with the actual welders, (2) Provide direct, instantaneous feedback to students, such as weld angle, arc length, and travel angle, to improve their skillset before applying it in a real-life setting, and (3) Reduce waste of welding rods and steel in the shop due to improper technique of the students.

Flexible Seating

Flexible seating provides many seating options for students. This allows students the
freedom to choose where they sit during station activities, independent and group work.

Critical Problems and Design Solutions: Building a Windmill

Our 6th grade Language Arts pilot program is comprised of two modules connected to Science content, and two modules connected to Social Studies content. The title of our second module is "Critical Problems and Design Solutions"; the accompanying text is The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba. In this module, students will study Design Thinking, a process that enables innovators to find solutions to critical problems. Our objectives for the project are to foster cross-curricular connections, and simulate Kamkwamba's scientific process via hands-on learning. Additionally, we will foster initiative, perseverance, and collaboration among our learners. We propose ordering one kit for every two sixth graders, allowing them to successfully work in pairs.

MIDI Controllers for Digital Music

8th grade music classes at SBMS are the creative side of music - composing, arranging, and sound engineering. MIDI controllers are plug-and-play USB devices for inputting music into a program. Usually, they are in the form of a small piano keyboard. I would like to use these with my digital music classes to enhance their experience composing and developing their own original musical ideas.

Decodable Text- Making the shifts in literacy

Decodable books encourage strong reading habits and help young readers build confidence. They give them the chance to apply phonics skills that they have previously learned. They create a sense of motivation and achievement in readers and help them develop good decoding habits.

Enthusiastic Reader Awards

Honoring students who are nominated by staff members who catch them grabbing a book rather than their phone in their down time.

Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Microsoft Suite will enhance the curriculum as an additional source to best prepare our students for their future. Currently, the government (including the military), many colleges, and many corporations primarily use Microsoft's Office Suite when conducting day-to-day operations due to the robust features available in the software suite. Recently, our department achieved the esteemed opportunity to be deemed a Business Academy. Our responsibility is to provide our students with every advantage at our disposal to ensure our students' readiness for the future and all they will encounter.

Flex Space Write and Wipe Collaboration Zone

The Flex Space Write and Wipe Collaboration Zone allows for the development of an engaging, collaborative
learning environment where students are excited to learn and where students will feel comfortable taking
risks, communicating their ideas, and collaborating to solve problems.

Ziumier Pro Gaming Z66 Headsets for Spanish Classes

These headsets allow each student to listen to and record responses to listening and video activities in
class. The students benefit from these headset and mic units since they reduce ambient recording
noise, making their recordings clearer and making it easier for them to hear the activities.

Math Minds

Stimulating young minds through math games to build number sense and application. We would like to introduce students to games and activities that can be played at home with their families and foster a love of math and numbers.

Chat, Play, and Learn

The augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) board would be located proudly at Newell Elementary
School playground, where children from all walks of life can use it to talk to each other. AAC boards use
simple pictures and words so that nonverbal people can still communicate their wants and needs with others.

Beautifying SBMS' Courtyard

Our classes goal with the assistance of Roy Townsend is to continue our efforts to bring life and beauty to the courtyard of SBMS for the enjoyment of all as well as to promote
students learning about agriculture and the application of hands-on life and vocational skills.

Symphonic Chimes

Chimes are an important percussion instrument that is called for even in beginning band music. It is a chromatic instrument, with tall steel tubes that are struck on top to produce a sound similar to church bells. The middle school band has never owned one, and in fact it is now the only percussion instrument we lack! So in making this purchase, our middle school band would have the complete complement of percussion instruments, enabling us to fully realize our repertoire, and allowing the students to play and hear this beautiful instrument.

Quaver Ed Interactive Digital Music Resource for Promethean Board

This program enhances student learning through interactive lessons and engaging musical activities. Some
features include customizable lessons, student interactive dashboard, teacher toolbox for daily activities.

Courtyard Seating

Adding portable seating options for teachers to use when bringing students to the
courtyard for activities & lessons.

InfoSec Learning Virtual Machine Cloud-hosted Simulation Exercise Range Environment

This is a nationwide key tool and platform that is beneficial for current Cyber Security courses in the High School and a 300-level college credit course. This platform is a safe place for students to experiment and simulate real world experience by utilizing
hands-on cybersecurity labs and exercises to practice with.

Going Green at SBMS!

With this hydroponic equipment, we will show students how to grow plants indoors without the use of soil. This is a fun and interesting way to show the students that regardless of the climate where they live, they can provide a sustainable food source for their family or community.

Math Workshop

These materials are essential in improving the quality of our math center-based activities. These materials will be used on a daily basis, both in small groups and individually by students.

A4 Light boards

These are used for copying work in the animation class as well as for the more advanced art students.

3rd Grade Rekenreks for Number Sense

Great for supporting the development of number sense, rekenreks are visual models that encourage students to subitize, think of numbers in groups, strengthen counting proficiency, develop addition and subtraction strategies, and gain a better understanding of number relationships.

Trout in the Classroom

Trout in the Classroom (TIC) is a science-based program that teaches children about the importance of coldwater conservation through a hands-on approach to learning. The TIC program is cross-curricular and can encompass many subject areas such as science, math, art, language arts, reading, technology, music, and more.

Social Differences Book Club books

A cornerstone of our 6th grade Language Arts curriculum is our Social Differences Book Clubs. The books in this unit fall into two categories: Windows books and Mirrors books. Mirrors books are books that the students can "see" themselves in- characters living lives and experiencing things very similar to their own. Windows books are books that allow our students to get a glimpse of the lives of others, some that are very different to our own, but help us build empathy and understanding.
